SCEIDEAL

Tá sé mar aidhm ag scoil Chaitliceach (a raibh baint ag an Aire lena bhunú) an fhorbairt iomlán agus chomhoiriúnach de na gnéithe daonna go léir den dalta a chur chun cinn, forbairt intleachtach, fhisiceach, chultúrtha, mhorálta agus spioradálta, lena n-áirítear caidreamh beo le Dia agus le daoine eile. Cuireann an scoil fealsúnacht saoil ar fáil, fealsúnacht arna spreagtha trí chreideamh i nDia agus sa saol, sa bhás agus san aiséirí d’Íosa Críost. Soláthraíonn an scoil Chaitliceach oideachas reiligiúnach do na daltaí i gcomhréir leis na teagasca, cleachtais agus traidisiúin den Eaglais Chaitliceach agus cuireann sé an creideamh Caitliceach chun cinn i ndéanmhaíocht na ndaltaí.

Gaelscoil

Is í an Ghaeilge teanga teagaisc agus teanga chumarsáide na scoile. Cleachtaítear Luaththumoideachas Iomlán sa scoil agus ní mhúintear Béarla go dtí Téarma 2 sna Naíonáin Mhóra. Is Gaeilge amháin a labhraíonn an múinteoir leis na páistí óna gcéad lá ar scoil sna Naíonáin Bheaga. De réir taighde idirnaisiúnta is é seo an tslí is fearr chun scileanna na ndaltaí sa dara teanga (An Ghaeilge ) a fhorbairt oiread agus is féidir chun go mbeidh ar a gcumas a gcuid oideachais a fháil trí mheán na ara teanga. Is trí mheán na Gaeilge a mhúintear ábhair an Churaclaim ar fad (seachas an Béarla) sna ranganna eile sa scoil. Cothaítear grá don teanga agus dá cultúr tríd an gceol, an amhránaíocht, an damhsa, an drámaíocht agus trí chluichí Gaelacha.

Bítear ag súil go léireoidh tuismitheoirí dearcadh dearfach i leith na Gaeilge. Spreagtar iad chun pé méid Gaeilge atá acu a úsáid lena bpáistí agus le foireann na scoile e.g. ‘Dia duit.’/ ‘Slán’ / ‘Go raibh maith agat’ etc. Eagraítear ranganna Gaeilge do thuismitheoirí, má bhíonn éileamh ann nó tugtar eolas dóibh ar ranganna sa cheantar a d’oirfeadh dóibh. Bíonn gach cumarsáid ón scoil go dtí an baile dhá theangach (Gaeilge agus Béarla).

Spreagtar agus mealltar na páistí sna Naíonáin chun an Ghaeilge atá acu a labhairt. Bítear ag súil leis gur Gaeilge amháin a bheadh a labhairt ag na daltaí eatarthu féin ó thús Rang 1 ar aghaidh. Roghnaítear Gaeilgeoir na Seachtaine i ngach rang agus tugtar duaiseanna do na ranganna is fearr. Bítear ag súil leis go mbeadh Gaeilge chruinn go maith á labhairt ó Rang 3 ar aghaidh agus go mbeidís uaibhreach as a gcumas teanga

Tá ‘Riail na Gaeilge’ i bhfeidhm sa scoil. Ceartaítear aon dalta a bhíonn ag caint as Béarla agus usáidtear na smachtbhannaí luaite i gCód Iompair na scoile, de réir breithiúnais an mhúinteora. Cuirtear páiste a bhriseann ‘Riail na Gaeilge’ chun na hoifige agus cuirtear a ainm i ‘Leabhar Nóta Dubh an Phríomhoide’. Ma bhíonn ainm pháiste ann faoi dhó sa téarma cuirtear glaoch abhaile agus má bhíonn sé ann faoi thrí iarrtar ar thuismitheoir(í) teacht isteach chun labhairt leis an bPríomhoide. Bítear ag súil le comhoibriú iomlán ó thuismitheoirí do ‘Riail na Gaeilge.’

All-Irish School

Irish is the language of instruction and of communication in the school. Early Total Immersion in Irish is practised and English is not taught until Term 2 of Naíonáin Mhóra. From their first day in school, the teacher speaks Irish to the children at all times. According to international research this is the best way to develop the children’s second language (Irish) and to enable them to receive their education through the medium of their second language, at no cost to their mother tongue. (English). All subjects (excluding English) are taught through Irish in the other classes.
We endeavour to foster a love of the Irish language and its culture. We do this mainly through music, song, dance, drama and Gaelic games.

Parents are expected to be supportive of the Irish Language and they are encouraged to use whatever Irish they have with their children and with the school staff e.g. saying ‘Dia duit.’ (Hello) / ‘Slán’ (Goodbye) / ‘Go raibh maith agat’ (Thank you) etc. Classes may be organised for the parents / guardians, if there is sufficient interest, or parents may be given informaton about Irish classes in the locality, that match their language proficiency. All Communication between the school and the home is bilingual (Irish and English).

Children in the Naíonáin are encouraged and supported to use Irish as they aquire / learn it. The teachers use various methods to give the children opportunities to communicate through Irish with their peers, one of them being ‘Aistear,’ a programme which places emphasis on learning through play.

It is expected that children use Irish as their medium of communication from the beginning of Rang 1. Teachers praise their efforts and they receive various awards. The award ‘Gaeilgeoir na Seachtaine’ is presented on a weekly basis to a child in every class in the school and they are given a trophy to bring home for the week-end. Other prizes are given to the best children / best classes throughout the year. From Rang 3 up, children are encouraged to speak grammatically correct Irish and to be proud of their language proficiency.

‘Riail na Gaeilge’ is enforced in the school from Rang 1 up. Children are corrrected, if they speak English outside of formal English lessons and they are asked not to do so again. Teachers use their discretion in applying sanctions from the school’s Code of Behaviour. Should a child continue to speak English, having been corrected previously, then he/she is sent to the principal’s ofice. His/her name is written in ‘Leabhar Nóta Dubh an Phríomhoide.’ Should the same child’s name be written a second time during a term, a phonecall will be made to his/her parent(s). Should the child’s name be written a third time, then his/her parent(s) need to attend a meeting with the príomhoide. Support for ‘Riail na Gaeilge’ is expected of all parents in Scoil Chrónáin.
