An Ghaeilge i Scoil Chrónáin

Is í an Ghaeilge teanga na scoile. Labhraíonn na páistí, na múinteoirí agus foireann na scoile Gaeilge. Úsáidtear modh an tumoideachais sa Ghaelscoil, is é sin, cuirtear an Ghaeilge os comhair na bpáisti ar bhonn leanúnach i ngnáthshuímh phraiticiúla fheidhmiúla ionas go bhfaigheann siad tuiscint agus líofacht sa Ghaeilge sa bhealach céanna is a d’fhoghlaim siad a gcéad teanga sa bhaile. Bíonn na paistí tumtha sa teanga ón gcéad lá ar scoil dóibh. Bíonn an chaint bunaithe ar na rudaí a bhíonn ar siúl ag an bpáiste, ar na bréagáin, ar threalamh, orthu féin etc. Bíonn focail an mhúinteora sothuigthe ón gcómhthéacs.

Forbraítear cumas cainte na bpáistí trí scéalta, amhráin agus rainn a mhúineadh. Úsáidtear áiseanna teagaisc spreagúla, póstaeir ildaite, pictiúir mhealltacha, puipéid, cluichí éagsúla, dlúthdhioscaí idirghníomhacha agus teicneolaíocht an eolais chun na páistí a spreagadh chun dul i mbun cumarsáide sa Ghaeilge. Leantar an Scéim ‘Séideán Sí’ sa scoil agus éiríonn leis na páistí ardchaighdeán a bhaint amach sa Ghaeilge de réir a chéile. Is é ár sprioc go labhróidís Gaeilge eatarthu féin istigh sa scoil agus i gclós na scoile, go mbeadh meas acu ar an nGaeilge agus go mbeidís an-bhródúil as a gcaighdeán Gaeilge.

IRISH IN SCOIL CHRÓNÁIN

Irish is the language of communication and the language of instruction in Scoil Chrónáin. Total immersion in Irish is used in Naíonáin Bheaga. From the beginning the teacher speaks all Irish to the children. The vocabularly at first deals with the children themselves and the immediate school environment. The meaning becomes obvious from the context. The children soon pick up the words / phrases / sentences used throughout the day, in much the same way as they acquired their First Language. The child’s language is further extended through the teaching of songs, rhymes, poems, and stories. Posters, pictures, puppets, games, and IT are used as teaching aids. We follow the Irish Scheme ‘Seideán Sí’ throughout the school, and the children gradually achieve a good standard of Irish as they advance from class to class. It is our aim that the children will use Irish at all times in school and in the yard and that they develop a love and a respect for the language and take pride in the standard of Irish, that they achieve while attending Scoil Chrónáín.

Ról na dTuismitheoirí:

Tá tábhacht as cuimse ag baint le ról na dtuismitheoirí chun cabhrú le hobair na scoile. Caithfidh tuismitheoirí dearcadh dearfach i leith na Gaeilge a chothú sna páistí agus tacaíocht a thabhairt d’obair na scoile agus d’obair an ranga. Is mór an chabhair í don pháiste má úsáidtear focail Ghaeilge ag ócáidí áirithe sa bhaile. Tá sé an-tábhachtach go léiríonn an tuismitheoir don pháiste go bhfuil dearcadh dearfach acu i leith na Gaeilge. Is féidir na gnéithe seo a leanas a chur san áireamh:

  • Ba chóir do thuismitheoirí an Ghaeilge atá acu a úsáid go rialta gach lá  sa bhaile ag am bricfeasta, ag am dinnéir nó ag dul a luí.
  • Is féidir taifead de scéalta agus d’amhráin a cheannach agus éisteacht leo in éineacht leis na páistí.
  • D’fhéadfaí DVD a cheannach agus féachaint orthu leis na páistí.
  • Ba chóir na páistí a spreagadh chun féachaint ar chartúin / chláir ar TG4
  • Ba chóir do thuismitheoirí an Ghaeilge atá acu a úsáid má bhíonn siad ag labhairt le múinteoirí, leis an bpríomhoide nó le foireann na scoile.
  • Ba chóir do thuismitheoirí leabhair Ghaeilge a léamh dá bpáistí.

Parents’ Role:

Parents play a very important role in supporting the work done in school. Parents must foster a positive attitude towards the Irish language and support school and class work. It is a great help to children if Irish words are used at home occasionally, this shows the children that their parents have a positive attitude towards Irish and are proud to speak it. The Irish language can be incorporated into daily life through the following means:

  • Parents should make regular use of Irish at home; e.g. at mealtimes / bedtime.
  • Recordings of Irish stories and songs are widely available to purchase.
  • DVDs in Irish are also available and are enjoyable to watch together.
  • Children should be encouraged to watch Cartoons / Irish programmes on TG4.
  • Parents should use their own Irish when speaking to members of school staff.
  • Irish books could be read as an alternative to English books.

Ag Tosú ar Scoil:

Is céim mhór chun cinn i bhforbairt an linbh é tosú ar scoil. Le cabhair agus tacaíocht ón mbaile agus ón scoil, áfach, ba chóir do/di socrú síos gan mórán dua ná deacracht. Tá ról rí-thábhachtach ag tuismitheoirí agus caomhnóirí chun cabhrú leis an bpáiste bheith neamhspléach agus muiníneach.

Starting school will be a new and interesting experience for your child. The children will usually adapt quickly and easily to their new surroundings and settle down without difficulty. Parents / guardians can help to prepare the child to cope with separation / socialisation and help to build a sense of independence in him/her.

Conas cabhrú le do pháiste a bheith ullamh don scoil:

Go Ginearálta:

Spreag do pháiste chun:

  • É / í féin a ghléasadh
  • An leithreas a úsáid i gceart.
  • A lámha a ní agus a thriomú.
  • Ciarsúr a úsáid.
  • Cóta a chur orthu, a bhaint díobh agus a chrochadh suas iad féin.
  • An mála scoile / bosca lóin a oscailt agus a dhúnadh agus rudaí a chur isteach agus a thógáil amach as.
  • Bréagáin a roinnt agus imirt le páistí eile. Iad a phiocadh suas agus a chur ar ais san áit cheart nuair atá siad críochnaithe leo.
  • A bheith chomh neamhspléach agus is féidir- ná déan aon ní dóibh gur féidir leo a dhéanamh dóibh féin.

An Chéad Lá Ar Scoil (The First Day at School):

An Chéad Lá ar Scoil Dé Luain 28-08-17: (The First Day at School – Monday 28-08-17),

dearfach le do pháiste ó thaobh chúrsaí scoile de. Mínigh don pháiste go mbeidh an múinteoir ag tabhairt aire dó, go mbeidh cairde nua aige / aici, agus go mbainfidh sé / sí taitneamh as saol na scoile. Don chéad lá den scoilbhliain, beidh fáilte roimh thuismitheoirí a bpáiste a thabhairt isteach sa seomra ranga. Déanaigí líne sa chlós ag 09:10, de réir an ranga ina bhfuil do pháiste. Siúlfaidh páistí agus tuistí isteach leis an múinteoir. Is fearr gan fanacht sa seomra ranga ró-fhada (níos lú ná cúig nóiméad). Fiú má bhíonn páiste trína chéile ar dtús, socróidh sé / sí síos go luath.

Be positive with your child when preparing him / her for school and explain what will happen there re: teacher, other children, breaks, sitting down, tidy-up time and home time. For the first day of school, parents are welcome to bring their child into the classroom. Line up with your child at 09:10 in the allotted place for the class in which your child is placed. The Múinteoir will then walk in with parents and children. It is best to leave as soon as possible the first morning (within five minutes). Most children, even if initially upset, soon become distracted by their surroundings and settle down.

Ón Dara lá ar aghaidh (From the second day onwards):

  • Ar an Máirt (29ú Lúnasa 2017) fágfaidh tú slán le do pháiste agus iad sa líne sa chlós ar maidin ag 9:10 i.n.
  • Ón gCéadaoin, 30ú Meán Fómhair ar aghaidh fágfaidh tú slán le do pháiste agus iad sa líne sa chlós ar maidin ag 9:00 i.n. Cothóidh seo neamhspleáchas sa pháiste.
  • Tá sé tábhachtach go mbeifeá in am ar maidin. Cuireann sé isteach ar fhorbairt shóisialta agus ar fhorbairt acadúil do pháiste má bhíonn sé / sí déanach go rialta.
  • On the second morning -Tuesday (29th August 2017), you should leave your child in his / her line in the yard at 9:10 a.m.
  • From Wednesday the 30th August onwards you should leave your child in his / her line in the yard at 9:00 a.m. This fosters independence.
  • Punctuality is very important as regular tardiness can impact on your child’s academic and social progress.

Ag Teacht ar Scoil Déanach (Arriving Late):

Má thárlaíonn sé go mbíonn tú déanach ag tabhairt do pháiste ar scoil tabhair go dtí an oifig é / í. Beidh ort an ‘Leabhar Déanach’ (leabhar dearg) sa halla a shíniú, más rud é go bhfuil tú sách déanach. Má tharlaíonn sé seo go rialta cuirfear nóta abhaile faoi, mar cuireann sé isteach ar dhul chun cinn an pháiste féin agus ar dhul chun cinn an ranga, má bhíonn páistí déanach go rialta ag teacht ar scoil.

If you arrive late and your child’s class has already gone in to the school you must go with your child to the Oifig. If you are quite late you must also sign the ‘Leabhar Déanach ’ (red book) in the hall. Should this happen frequently a note will be sent home to remind you that not only is your child missing out on his / her education but so also are his / her classmates, due to the interruption caused by the late arrival of a pupil.

Leabhar Déanach

Ag dul Abhaile (Going Home):

  • Tabharfaidh an múinteoir an rang amach ina líne go dtí áit ar leith sa chlós ar a 12.00. Tá sé tábhachtach go mbeiféa sa chlós in am. Iarrfaidh sí ar thuismitheoir/ feighlí an chéad pháiste teacht agus an páiste a bhailiú. Ansin iarrfaidh sí ar thuismitheoir / feighlí an dara páiste teacht agus an páiste a bhailiú etc. De barr cúiseanna sláinte agus sábháilteachta níl cead an páiste a thógáil ón line, sula n-iarrann an múinteoir ort sin a dhéanamh. Mínigh an próiséas seo, le do thoil, d’aon duine a bheidh ag bailiú do pháiste.
  • Ón Luan 11ú Meán Fómhair ar aghaidh, baileoidh tú do pháiste ón line sa chlós gach tráthnóna ag a 13:40 p.m. Más rud é go gcuirtear moill ort aon lá, de bharr toscaí ar leith, glaoigh ar an oifig chun an múinteoir a chur ar an eolas.
  • The teacher will bring the children in their line to the allotted area of the yard at 12 noon. It is essential that you are in the yard on time. She will ask the parent / minder of the first person in the line to come forward and collect that child. Then she’ll ask the parent / minder of the second child to come forward etc. For health and safety reasons you may not take the child from the line before the teacher asks you to come forward. Please explain this process to all your childminders.
  • From Monday 11th September onwards, you should collect your child from his / her line in the yard at 13:40 p.m. If you are ever running late, due to exceptional unforeseen circumstances, please ring the oifig to inform your child’s teacher of this.

Tabhair liosta ainmneacha na ndaoine gur féidir leo do pháiste a bhailiú agus uimhreacha a bhfón póca don mhúinteoir an chéad tseachtain. Má bhíonn aon athrú ann maidir le bailiúchán do pháiste, ba cheart duit é sin a rá leis an múinteoir agus leis an bpáiste roimh ré. Ba chóir d’aon duine nua ar an liosta é / í féin a chur in aithne don mhúinteoir nuair a thagann sé / sí chuici chun an páiste a bhailiú.

During the first week please give a list of names and telephone numbers of the people who may collect your child to the class teacher. If at any time the collecting routine has to be changed, be sure and tell the teacher and your child beforehand. Anyone new on your list should identify himself / herself to the class teacher when he / she comes forward to collect your child.

Ag Fágáil Luath (Leaving Early):

Má bhíonn ar pháiste an scoil a fhágáil go luath, ar chúis éigin, ní mór duit dul chuig an oifig agus an leabhar ‘Ag fágáil Luath’ (leabhar gorm) sa halla a shíniú. Gheobhaidh an rúnaí do pháiste duit ansin.

Should you need to take your child home early you will need to call to the oifig and sign the book ‘Ag Fágáil Luath’ (blue book) in the hall. The secretary will then get your child for you.

Leabhar ‘Ag Fágáil Luath’

Asláithreacht (Absence):

Má bhíonn páiste as láthair caithfidh na tuismitheoirí nóta a scríobh ag míniú cén fáth nach raibh an páiste ar scoil. Tá ‘Foirm Asláithreachta’ againn ar scoil chuige seo. Má chailleann páiste fiche lá nó níos mó sa bhliain cuireann an scoil an t-eolas sin ar aghaidh chuig TUSLA (An Ghníomhaireacht um Leanaí agus an Teaghlach).

Any absences must be explained in a written note. A Form called ‘Foirm Asláithreachta’ is used for this purpose in Scoil Chrónáin. If a child loses 20 school days or more during the school year, we are required by law to inform TUSLA (The Child and Family Agency).

We have a school Policy on Healthy Lunches. Sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks, chewing gum, biscuits and crisps are not allowed. Please ensure that your child’s lunch is a healthy one.

Garchabhair (First Aid):

Téann an rúnaí / múinteoir / cúntóir riachtanais speisialta i dteagmháil leis na tuismitheoirí / caomhnóirí i gcás breoiteachta. I gcás gortaithe tugann ball foirne garchabhair don dalta agus más gá cuireann an rúnaí glaoch abhaile. Cuirtear glaoch abhaile i gcónaí má bhuaileann páiste a cheann.

Cuireann na múinteoirí litir abhaile maidir le galair thógálacha etc mar shampla an bhruitíneach dhearg, an deilgneach agus do mhíolta cinn freisin. Má tá galar tógálach ar do pháiste, ní mór duit an scoil a chur ar an eolas faoi.

Má tá aon fhadhb sláinte ag do pháiste / má tá sé nó sí ag tógáil aon leigheas caithfidh tú dul i dteagmháil leis an bpríomhoide faoi.

The school secretary / teacher / SNA will contact parents / guardians in case of illness.

In the case of an accident basic first aid will be administered. If necessary parents will be contacted. If a child bangs his / her head you will be contacted also.

The teacher will send home letters regarding infectious illnesses etc e.g. measles, chicken pox and also for head lice. (Parents should inform the school if their child has an illness / infectious disease).

If your child has any medical condition / is taking any medication you must speak to the principal regarding this.

Ag bualadh leis an Múinteoir Ranga (Meeting the Teacher):

Bíonn múinteoirí na scoile sásta i gcónaí bualadh leis na tuismitheoirí / caomhnóiri. Iarraimid oraibh gan cur isteach ar an líne ar maidin ná obair an ranga / obair an mhúinteora, le linn am scoile.  Más mian leat labhairt leis an múinteoir faoi rud ar bith, ba chóir coinne a dhéanamh roimh ré leis an Rúnaí, chun bualadh leis an múinteoir ag am cuí a oireann daoibh beirt. Bíonn cruinnithe múinteoirí / tuismitheoirí againn sa chéad téarma agus faigheann tuismitheoirí tuairisc scríofa ar dhul chun cinn an pháiste ag deireadh na scoilbhliana.

We are always happy to meet with parents/ guardians. Having said that, we ask that you do not delay the teachers in the yard in the morning, not interrupt the class / teacher during the school day. If you would like to talk with the teacher, please make an appointment with the secretary and arrange a time, that suits both you and the teacher. Parent / Teacher meetings take place in the first term and parents receive a written report of the child’s progress at the end of the school year.

Cuireadh Breithlae (Birthday Invitations):

Níl cead cuireadh breithlae a thabhairt amach i rith am scoile, mar cuireann seo isteach ar pháistí nach bhfaigheann cuireadh.

Birthday invitations are not to be handed out during school time, as this can upset children who do not receive an invitation.

Obair Bhaile (Homework):

Tugtar obair bhaile do na daltaí ón Luan go dtí an Déardaoin. Tá ról lárnach agat chun cabhrú le do pháiste i bhforbairt na litearthachta agus na h-uimhreachta. Ba chóir do thuismitheorí / chaomhnóiri an obair bhaile a sheiceáil agus é a shíniú nuair a bhíonn sé déanta.

Homework is given from Monday to Thursday. You have a vital role to play in helping your child develop his / her literacy and numeracy skills. Parents / Guardians should check all homework and sign it when completed.

  • An litir a scríobh
  • Focail a thosnaíonn leis an litir a rá
  • Focal aonair a léamh

  • Say the sound of the letter
  • To name the letter
  • To write the letter
  • Name words that start with the letter
  • To read individual words
  • To identify a word and put the word into a sentence

Scríbhneoireacht

Tá sé an-tábhachtach go bhfuil an páiste ag breith ar an bpeann luaidhe mar is cóir. Léigh na treoracha thíos go cúramach.

Conas breith ar do pheann luaidhe

Hand Writing

Ba chóir é a mhúineadh do pháiste go luath conas breith i gceart ar pheann luaidhe. Cruthaítear drochnósanna go luath agus is deacair iad a bhriseadh. Tóg an t-am chun féachaint ar na pictiúir thíos agus cuir in iúl dod’ pháiste gurb é seo an t-aon slí chun breith ar an bpeann luaidhe. Má tá an ghreim cheart acu beidh an scríbhneoireacht níos néata agus beidh sé níos éasca bogadh ar aghaidh go dtí scríbhneoireacht cheangailte. Ba chóir do thosaitheoirí scríobh le peann luaidhe triantánach. Tá sé éasca teacht orthu seo i siopaí leabhar.

Hand writing 2

Beir greim éadrom ar do pheann luaidhe le d’ordóg agus do chéad mhéar. Ba chóir don mhéar sa lár bheith ar an bpeann luaidhe go héadrom freisin. Beidh na méara eile ag luí go héadrom ar an mbord.

Ba chóir don pheann luaidhe bheith ag dul sa treo céanna le do lámh. Ná cuir é san aer ná i dtreo do choirp. Bain úsáid as do lámh eile chun greim a choimeád ar do chóipleabhar. Féach thíos.

How to hold your pencil

Hand Writing

Children must be taught from a very early age to hold a pencil correctly. Bad habits formed early are very hard to break. Please take the time to look at the pictures below and insist that this is the only way to hold a pencil. A correct grip makes for neater writers and the transition from print to joined writing later on in school is more successful. Early writers should write with triangular pencils. These are readily available in all stationary shops.

Hand writing 2

Hold your pencil very lightly with your thumb and forefinger. Your middle finger should also rest very lightly on the pencil. Your other fingers and hand can rest lightly on the desk.

Do not press heavily on the paper.

The pencil should point along your arm. It must not point up in the air or towards your body. Use your other hand to hold your paper or exercise book steady (see below).

You can help ….

Your child must develop the ability to get the hand and eye working together. This is very important. Get her / him manipulating toys like:

  • Jig-saws, lego, beads to thread
  • Plasticine (marla) to make her / his own shapes
  • A colouring book and thick crayons
  • Sheets of paper that she / he can cut up with a safe scissors etc

Foghraíocht / Phonics:

English Reading and English phonics will be introduced in Naíonáin Mhóra. Work sheets will be sent home to be completed. Please read the following information carefully.

Information for Parents:

  1. Learning the letter sounds

As the letters are taught, they are stuck into a Sound Book, which is brought home. Please go through the Sound Book with your child every day.

The letters are not introduced in alphabetical order. The first group ‘s a t i p n’ has been chosen because they make more simple three letter words than any other six letters. Sounds with more than one way of being written are first taught on one form only. For instance, the sound ‘ai’ (rain) is on the Sound Sheet. The alternatives ‘a_e (cake) and ‘ay’ (day) will be taught later.

  1. Letter Formation

It is very important that your child holds the pencil correctly. If the hold starts incorrectly it is very difficult to get it right later on. It is important to ensure your child is making the letter in the correct manner. Many of the letters have a joining tail at the end to make it easier to transfer into joined up writing.

  1. Blending

Blending is a process of saying the sounds in a word and then running them together to make the word, e.g. c – a – t is cat. It is a technique your child will need to learn, and it improves with practice. Some children take longer to do this than others. To start with, you should sound out the word and see if your child can hear it. The sounds must be said quickly to hear the words. It is easier if the first sound is said slightly louder e.g. b-u-s. To give your child practice at blending she / he will bring home Word Boxes. Please listen to your child blending the sounds to read the words, and then send it back to school. Once your child has been through the Word Boxes they will bring home a reading book. Please listen to him / her regularly.

It is important that your child understands what she / he has read. You can help by talking about the story with your child.

  1. Identifying sounds in words:

If your child is going to be able to write independently she / he will need to be able to hear the sounds in words and to write the letters for those sounds.

When your child is able to hear the sounds in word he / she may bring home words with which to practice their new writing skill. These words are for you to call out. He / she has to listen for the sounds and write down the letters for these sounds. This is the first step towards your child becoming an independent writer

  1. Tricky Words:

Some words cannot be sounded out or spelt correctly by listening for the sounds in them. These are called ‘Tricky Words’ and have to be learnt. As your child becomes more fluent at reading and writing, she / he will be taught how to cope with Tricky Words.

  1. Finally:

This all sounds like a great deal of work, but it goes in stages and is spread over a considerable period of time. Little and often is best. Your child may be tired after school but don’t worry. It is better to leave it than to push too hard. There is no doubt that the effort on your part, at this stage, is well worth it.

Teicneolaíocht an Eolais agus na Cumarsáide

Faigheann daltaí na scoile deiseanna iontacha chun úsáid a bhaint as an teicneolaíocht chun curaclam na bunscoile a chomhlánú. Tá clár bán idirghníomhach i ngach seomra ranga i Scoil Chrónáin. Spreagadh iontach is ea iad seo do dhaltaí agus do mhúinteoirí sna hábhair ar fad. Úsáideann na daltaí ríomhairí chun daingniú a dhéanamh ar obair an ranga, chun taighde a dhéanamh do thionscnaimh agus chun obair scríofa a chur i láthair. Tá Polasaí Usáide Inghlactha ag an scoil maidir le TEC.

Information and Communication Technology

The pupils of Scoil Chrónáin are in the enviable position of having the latest technology at their fingertips. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard (IWB). The IWB is a wonderful tool to inspire both students and teachers in all the curricular areas. The children get an opportunity to use computers to consolidate class work, to research topics for project work and to present their written work in an attractive way. The school has an Acceptable Usage Policy as regards ICT.
